Perfectly touching up a wall can seem like an impossible task, but if you follow these easy tips you will be able to master it yourself!

As professionals in the industry, we would still advise homeowners to rather  re-paint the whole wall from corner to corner to ensure that it is flawless. If you do end up touching up, ALWAYS use leftover paint (stored properly), as new paint will always display a bit different even when it has been matched as close to perfect.

1. Take Time on Repairs and Prepping

Prepping Wall

This can easily be the seen as the most important part of the project. Proper prepping is usually considered highly important, but especially in this case more than ever! As we always like to advise our customers “proper prepping prevents poor performance”.

Make sure any cracks or holes are filled and sanded accordingly and that they are finished with the same texture as the rest of the wall! This is highly important to ensure that everything blends properly when applying the top coat.

2. Use the Right Tools

Paint Tools

There is a popular saying that goes like this-  “every problem looks like a nail to the man who only has a hammer”. By using the wrong (or cheap) equipment/tools, you will just end up regretting the whole project attempt!

Try to find the right paint roller that will match the texture that was previously on the wall. Using a smaller size roller is often better (100mm). Only use a paintbrush on corners or edges, not  in the middle of a wall (unless it is a really small spot you are touching up).

3. Be Aware of The Paint Type

Can of Paint

Be very aware of building sheen on top of sheen when touching up paint with a sheen or gloss finish. This can stand out a lot, especially when the light falls on it a certain way.

If you do end up buying new paint, be very careful to buy the exact same product and color mixture, or at least the same finish (sheen, satin, matt, etc.)

Make sure that if you use old paint that has been stored for a while, that it is still perfectly paintable before applying it. Note that if you try touching up an exterior wall that gets a lot of sun, using the same paint from a few years ago might not match the paint on the wall (due to possible fading).
